Aiding the Forest Industry to Recover : Municipalities and Partners Mobilize

Québec City, February 22, 2012 – The Quebec Forest Industry Council (QFIC) wholeheartedly supports the initiative of the Fédération Québécoise des Municipalités (FQM, or Quebec federation of municipalities) and its partners aimed at prompting the provincial government to adopt concrete measures in order to promote the recovery of the forest sector.

“The mobilization of elected representatives testifies both to the importance of the forest sector in the entire economy of Quebec and the urgent need to adopt concrete measures to support the industry in the difficult economic context in which it is operating. From this perspective, concerted action is required in order to maintain and transform our industrial structure,” declared Mr. André Tremblay, QFIC’s Chief Executive Officer.

In follow-up to a reflection process concerning the future of the sector, the forest industry has firmly set about implementing solutions that will enable it to become more innovative, oriented toward value-added products and, ultimately, a source of sustainable jobs across all regions of Quebec.

It will take the support of the government in order to undertake restructuring of this kind and scale. That is why the forest industry is supporting the elected representatives who have petitioned the provincial government to quickly make known its intentions concerning the future of the sector in the form of an industrial development strategy. Such a strategy should provide a structuring, effective and innovative response to the needs of the forest sector.

“Finally, in the QFIC’s view, the government must genuinely support this strategy by allocating the moneys required to ensure effective implementation and thereby enable the forest industry to continue to be a driver of economic development for Quebec and all its regions,” Mr. Tremblay emphasized.
