Paper making

The history of paper is a very remarkable one. It was first invented by the Chinese more than 2000 years ago. For a long time, paper was made from hemp, flax and cotton fibre, but as consumption increased, new raw materials had to be found.

It was a German inventor, Friedrich Keller, who first had the idea of pressing wood with a wet grinding wheel to extract fibre (1840).Wood pulp was thus born. In the years since then, paper technology has made huge strides, especially over the past 20 years; however, the five main steps in paper-making have remained unchanged.
