The QFIC satisfied with recommendations of private woodlot task force

Québec City, October 24, 2014 – The Quebec Forest Industry Council (QFIC) is quite satisfied with the report of the “Chantier sur l’efficacité des mesures en forêt privée” (Task force on the effectiveness of private woodlot support measures) presented last Friday at the stakeholders table by Mr. Michel Belley, former rector (president) of the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC). The report is the outcome of a serious mandate given by the Government of Quebec during the November 2013 “Rendez-vous de la forêt” (Quebec forest summit) with the aim of supporting the transformation of the industry.

Mr. André Tremblay, QFIC’s CEO, notes that “Mr. Belley fully grasped the main concern that the industry set out before him during the consultation period. In that regard, he recommended aligning the investments in the development of our private woodlots with the delivery of wood to Quebec mills, ensuring them of adequate supplies, considering the fact that wood from private woodlots accounts for a considerable share of the available resource.”

For the industry, the main issue consists in mobilizing wood volumes of sufficient quality and quantity to provide Quebec businesses with a competitive supply and thereby enable them to develop or maintain their market edge. “Mr. Belley was very courageous and constructive in the many recommendations he made, particularly by tackling the inconsistencies of the existent system, addressing issues of governance and the implementation of a single rate structure for all Quebec, and giving due consideration to the value chain as a whole.”

The Council requests that the Government of Quebec quickly implement these recommendations, and offers its collaboration on achieving that goal.
