Premier’s Inaugural Address: “Quebec’s Forests Are a Jewel!”

Québec City, November 1, 2012 – The Quebec Forest Industry Council (QFIC) wishes to highlight the determination expressed yesterday by Quebec Premier Pauline Marois in her inaugural address to the 40th legislation of the National Assembly, in support of revitalizing the province’s forest industry.

“We hope that this determination will be translated into concrete actions, particularly in regard to the implementation of the new public forest management regime. The Council justifiably recalls that regime implementation should not generate additional costs for the industry and thus prevent our businesses from benefiting from the recovery that is just now comin into view. It is also worth noting that the priority remains, in the short term, of creating a committee focused on deployment of the industrial development strategy in order to accelerate the innovation required to transform our sector,” added Mr. André Tremblay, QFIC’s Chief Executive Officer.

The CIFQ greets positively the Premier’s tangible commitment to foster the use and promotion of wood for construction purposes and to amend the Quebec Construction Code regarding wood for buildings of 5 and 6 storeys.

“Without a doubt, the most convincing action will be to quickly adopt a ‘Charter of Wood,’ as announced yesterday. This plan follows forward from the Beaulieu Report, which advocates ensuring that wood is considered on an equal footing with other building materials, so we can avoid a repetition of situations such as the one surrounding the construction of the future Québec City amphitheatre. Quite clearly, the results obtained by cecobois during the last few years demonstrates the relevance of pursuing in this direction and insisting that the government assume its responsibility in terms of giving more systematic consideration to the use of wood,” concluded Mr. Tremblay.
