A positive message from Minister Lessard

Potential use of unharvested timber volumes

Québec City, February 18, 2015 – During a stop in the Mauricie region last Monday, Mr. Laurent Lessard, Quebec Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, exhibited receptiveness toward making timber volumes that had gone unharvested during the 2008-2013 period available for harvesting in order to satisfy the needs signalled by forest companies and sector stakeholders. Quebec Forest Industry Council (QFIC) perceives an encouraging sign for the industry as well efforts to create jobs in Quebec’s regions.

“The message conveyed by Minister Lessard is very positive – not just for the Mauricie but for all regions across Quebec. The possibility of using harvestable volumes of timber will enable the forest industry to generate significant positive economic benefits for all Quebec and improve its profitability. The industry would like to point out that each cubic metre of wood harvested yields $60 that serves to improve public government finances. The forest industry is an important lever of economic development, and we are reaching out to the Government of Quebec in order to meet rising demand and create wealth that benefits all society,” noted Mr. André Tremblay, the QFIC’s CEO.

The forest industry’s enormous economic potential

The QFIC firmly believes that Quebec’s economy stands to benefit more from the numerous positive impacts of an innovative and prosperous industry.

“In Quebec we have one of the world’s most rigorous and respected forest regimes. Our forests and forest industry are a part of the solution in efforts to achieve a Quebec that is green, prosperous and competitive in keeping with the principles of sustainable development. We are more than ready and willing to engage in a constructive dialogue with the government,” concluded Mr. Tremblay.
